PORTAGE — After losing the regional title by 19 points, Brodhead-Juda girls won the Division 2 Portage sectional on May 26. The Lady Cardinals scored 75 points, 15 more than second-place Kettle Moraine Lutheran.
Addison Yates qualified for state in all four of her events — 100-meter hurdles, long jump, high jump and the 4x100 relay — scoring 29 points. Although Yates has been to state before for three of the four events, she did not make it in 2023.
Stella Arn, also a member of the 4x100 relay team, was a sectional champion in the 100- and 200-meter events. She scored 28 points.
Kalena Riemer was another key component in Brodhead-Juda’s victory, winning the 800-meter run and advancing in the 400-meter dash. She scored 16 points.
Brodhead-Juda girls have the second most entries in Division 2 (11) behind New Berlin West (12). If the Cardinals come to fight, they have a shot at earning a state title.
Although the Brodhead-Juda boys didn’t have the same team success, individual achievements came to light. Gavin Pinnow set a new school record in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:58.25. He finished sixth and did not qualify for state. The 4x100 relay team — composed of Eric Woodward, Grayson Arn, Gunner Boegli and Cohen Henze — broke the school record set in 1995 by Kerry Johnson, Greg Jaconson, Jeff Sturdevant and Jared Arn. The 2024 squad ran it in 43.62, edging the old record of 43.76.
