MONROE — The Cheesemakers boys basketball team started its season off in a big way Nov. 24. Monroe knocked off Beloit Memorial 65-59 in overtime.
Both teams were tied at 27 at halftime and 57 at the end of regulation. Monroe scored all eight of their overtime points from the free throw line, including senior Nick Schumacher’s perfect 6-for-6 mark.
Senior Kade King led the Cheesemakers with 14 points in the game, including going 8 of 13 on free throws. Monroe was 22 of 32 from the charity stripe in the game. Schumacher had 13 total points and freshman JT Seagreaves finished with 12 in his varsity debut.
Monroe knocked down seven 3-pointers in the game, with freshman Carson Leuzinger hitting three. Sophomore Cade Meyer hit a second-half 3 and finished with eight points. Eight different Cheesemakers scored in the game.
Beloit Memorial was led by Terrell Ringer and Jaden Bell, who each had 13 points. Bell scored 11 of his 13 points in the first half, while Ringer scored 11 of his 13 points after the break. The Knights were 10 of 16 from the free throw line and hit seven 3s.
Monroe’s second game of the season was scheduled for Nov. 26 at Beaver Dam and the Badger South Conference opener is slated for Nov. 30 at Fort Atkinson.
