4-run 7th scores Darlington a walk-off win vs. Southwestern

WHITEWATER — Brodhead-Juda swept the Cheesemakers in a nonconference doubleheader at UW-Whitewater May 7. The Cardinals won the first game 4-1, then took the nightcap 14-4.

In the opener, Brodhead-Juda scored twice in the first, and twice more in the bottom of the third. Monroe’s lone run came in the top of the third.

Brady Malkow went the distance for the Cardinals, allowing a single unearned run and just three hits with no walked in seven innings. He struck out 13 Monroe batters.

Henry Brukwicki tossed 5.1 innings for Monroe, striking out eight while allowing seven hits and two walks. Brevin Rach recorded two outs on four pitches of relief.

Gabe Bockhop and David Mazlowski each had two hits for Brodhead-Juda, while Malkow doubled and Dylan Lewis drove in two baserunners. Keatin Sweeney doubled for Monroe.

In the second game, Bockhop went 3-for-3 with two doubles and four RBIs. Mazloski added two hits and two RBIs, while Clayton Elliot added two RBIs. 

Cooper Woelky allowed seven hits, three walks and four earned runs in four innings, and Kohen Sawle pitched the final inning, scattering a hit and a walk.

George Brukwicki tossed four innings for Monroe, giving up eight runs (three earned) on six hits and four walks with six strikeouts. Keegan Dahmen gave up six runs (four earned) in an inning of relief. 

Both teams were square at 4-4 after two innings, but the Cardinals scored four in the third and six in the top of the fifth. The Cheesemakers committed six errors.

Tucker Markham was 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs in the leadoff spot for Monroe. George Brukwicki had a hit and two walks.


Monona Grove 10, Monroe 0

COTTAGE GROVE — The Cheesemakers were held to just two runs in a Badger Conference game May 6.

Chase Stoerp took the loss on the hill, allowing nine runs in 3.2 innings. Braden Rupnow and Drew Indergand relieved for Monroe. 

Monona Grove scored three runs in each of the first two innings and led 9-0 after four.


Evansville 4, Brodhead-Juda 1

EVANSVILLE — The Cardinals lost a Rock Valley Conference road game May 5. Evansville scored three runs in the third inning and never looked back.

Gabe Bockhop had two of Brodhead-Juda’s five hits. The Cardinals walked six times but left 11 runners on base. Malkow tossed 2.2 innings to open the game, allowing one hit and two runs with three strikeouts. Clayton Elliot allowed two runs on four hits and three walks in 3.1 innings.


Belmont 5, Argyle 0

Belmont 11, Argyle 1

BELMONT — The Argyle Orioles were swept by the Belmont Braves in a Six Rivers crossover doubleheader May 6.

In the opener, Braves pitchers Konner Lancaster and Jesse Rulz combined to no-hit Argyle. Lancaster was pulled after reaching the 100-pitch limit. He gave up one unearned run on six walks while striking out 10. Rulz walked a pair of batters before ending the top of the sixth with a strikeout.

The Orioles tied the score at 1-1 in the top of the fifth, but the Braves scored three runs in the bottom half of the inning to make it 4-1. In the bottom of the sixth, Belmont scored seven runs — four unearned — against Argyle reliever Buddy Gerber, ending the game an inning early.

In the second game, Argyle collected two hits against Tanner Simmons, who struck out 10 and walked none, tossing 59 pitches in five innings.

Brady Penniston, Will Helfvogt and Ike Waage all pitched for Argyle. Helfvogt struck out four in two innings of work, with Waage striking out two. 

Kolby Lancaster homered and had two doubles in the doubleheader for Belmont. 


New Glarus 4, Wisconsin Heights 3

NEW GLARUS — After letting a 2-run lead slip in the top of the seventh, the Glarner Knights rallied to a walk-off victory over the Vanguards in a Capitol South game May 5.

Wisconsin Heights had four batters reach to lead off the seventh — the leadoff hitter by error, then a hit-by-pitch, bunt single and fielder’s choice groundout. Trailing 3-2, the Vanguards dropped down a successful squeeze to tie the game. 

In the bottom half of the inning, Leyton Mihlbauer reached to lead off, then Easton Dreyfus hit a grounder to second and reached on an error. Patrick Alt then laid down a sacrifice bunt to put the game-winning run on third base. The Vanguards intentionally walked Eli Zimmerman to load the bases in hopes of scoring a double play, but Ethan Friedrich singled to left to walk-off the game.

Dreyfus had two hits in the contest. Alt started on the mound, striking out five, and allowed three hits and three unearned runs in 6-plus innings. Brett Warrell finished the seventh, allowing an unearned run to score.


Edgewood 6, New Glarus 4

MADISON — The Crusaders knocked off the Knights May 6 at Warner Park in Madison on a seventh-inning 2-run walk-off home run from Luke Thompson. 

Edgewood took a 2-0 advantage after three innings, but the Knights tied it in the bottom half of the inning. Trailing 4-3 in the top of the seventh, Easton Dreyfus tied the game with a 2-out RBI single to right.

In the bottom of the seventh, Joe Hartlieb reached on an infield single. Three pitches later, on a 1-1 count, Thompson hit the ball over the fence in left field to end the game.

Eli Zimmerman started for New Glarus, going four innings with seven strikeouts and allowing two hits and two walks. Both runs against him in the third were unearned. Brennan Butler pitched two innings of relief. Just two of the four runs charged to Butler were earned.

Dreyfus had two hits and two walks.


Pecatonica 20, Monticello-Albany 1

BLANCHARDVILLE — The Vikings pounded out 16 hits, walked four times, reached thrice by beanballs and took advantage of five errors to pick up a Six Rivers East win May 5.

Carson Kurschner was 3-for-4 with four RBIs for Pecatonica, with Hunter Enloe, Jayden Johnson and Bryce Johnsrud each collecting two hits and scoring at least two runs. Kegun Brunker added three RBIs and Tyler McKeon walked twice and scored four runs. 

Johnson, Kurschner, Johnsrud and Brunker each doubled, with Enloe smashing two doubles. Kurschner also tripled. 

Elijah Knutson allowed one earned run on a hit and a walk in four innings on the mound for Pecatonica. Lukas Rue pitched a scoreless fifth inning. 

Four pitched for Monticello-Albany, with 16 of the 20 runs earned. Jackson Eyler doubled for the Ponies. 


Pecatonica 14, Shullsburg-Benton 0

Pecatonica 15, Shullsburg-Benton 2

BLANCHARDVILLE — The Pecatonica Vikings swept the Shullsburg-Benton Miners with ease in a May 6 Six Rivers crossover doubleheader.

Jayden Johnson tossed a two-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts for the Vikings in the 14-0 victory. Max Steele had a double and triple, and Johnson, Elijah Knutson and Kegun Brunker also had two hits for Pecatonica. 

In the 15-2 victory, Coy Ruegsegger allowed one hit and one walk in five innings, striking out five. At the plate he was 2-for-3 with a double. Kegun Brunker scored three times on a hit and two walks. Hunter Enloe also reached on two walks and a hit. The Vikings walked 12 times and had 10 hits — 9 of which were singles.


Darlington 4, Southwestern 3

DARLINGTON — The Redbirds upset the Wildcats May 6, thanks to a 4-run seventh inning and a strong game on the mound by Gage Banfield.

Braden Davis was 3-for-4 for Darlington, with Tye Crist and Cadyn Burbach each finishing 2-for-3. 

Maddox Goebel hit a 3-run double in the bottom of the seventh to tie it, and three batters later Davis singled in the game-winning run.

The win is just the second of the conference slate for the Redbirds. Southwestern was coming off a win over sixth-ranked Mineral Point earlier in the week.
