Brodhead Cardinals Win 3 out of 4 Games in Softball
Senior Ava Risum threw a no-hitter and freshman Mady Henning drove in five runs to lead the Brodhead Cardinals to a 14-0 win over the Edgerton Crimson Tide in Rock Valley Conference, Rock Division softball on May 8 in Brodhead. Risum struck out 12 and walked none in pitching her first no-hitter this season. Risum also went 4x4 with three RBIs and scored three runs. Leah Rear and Tatum Ceslok also drove in a pair of runs for the Cardinals, who improved to 9-4 in the RVC-Rock with the win.
On May 9, the Jefferson Eagles of the RVC-Valley got by the Brodhead Cardinals 2-1 in Brodhead. Risum allowed two runs on eight hits with two walks and 12 strikeouts. Risum scored the Cardinals only run in the first inning. Besides Risum, Ceslok got the Cardinals only other hit. Jefferson is the division leader in the RVC-Valley and is the No. 1 ranked team in the Wisconsin Fastpitch Softball Coaches Associations poll in Division 2. The Cardinals fell to 12-4 overall with the loss.
The Cardinals competed in the Belmont Tournament on May 10, and in their first game, they rolled past the River Valley Blackhawks, 7-1. Freshman Mady Henning pitched a complete game and scattered five hits and allowed one run while striking out 16 batters. Henning also went 3x4 at the plate and hit a home run and drove in two runs. Keegan Steinke and Kylee Wahler also had a pair of RBIs for Brodhead. The win put the Cardinals record at 13-4 and sent them into the championship game of the Belmont Tournament.
The Cardinals captured the championship of the Belmont Tournament by winning over the Cuba City Cubans, 2-1 on May 10. The Cardinals got only one hit, but Natalie Pierce got a double and an RBI and Tatum Celok also drove in a run while Ava Risum allowed just two hits and a run with one walk and 14 strikeouts in helping Brodhead improve to 14-4 overall. Cuba City, the leader in the SWAL, is ranked No. 3 in Division 4 and Brodhead is ranked No. 9 in Division 2. Brodhead played at Big Foot for a RVC-Rock Division game on May 13.
Paulson, Golembiewski Lead Cheesemakers To Wins
Senior Kaegann Paulson homered and senior Sophie Golembiewski threw a one-hit shutout, leading the Monroe Cheesemakers to a 14-0 win in five innings over Delavan-Darien in RVC-Rock Division softball action on May 8. The Cheesemakers blasted the Comets with 11 runs in the first inning. Senior catcher Brinley Roidt tripled and doubled and drove in three runs and third baseman Alexis Herbst got two hits and two RBIs.
On May 9, Monroe took on the Clinton Cougars and won 5-2. Paulson pitched a complete game and allowed just two runs on four hits. Designated hitter Maddi Ruegsegger was 2x3 with three RBIs and scored a run. Golembiewski played at first base and got a hit and two RBIs. Monroe is now 16-6 overall (10-2 RVC-Valley) with a conference game at East Troy on May 13 before facing conference leader Jefferson at home on May 14.
Monticello-New Glarus Falls To River Ridge
The River Ridge Timberwolves outlasted the Monticello-New Glarus Ponies in Six Rivers Conference softball at Bloomington on May 8. The Ponies grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third inning but were shut out the rest of the way while the Timberwolves put three runs across in the fifth inning and another run in the sixth. Senior catcher Dalana Trumpy went 2x4 and drove in senior Molly Olson with the Ponies only run. Freshman Heidi Olson allowed four runs on nine hits along with three walks and struck out 10 batters. The Ponies fell to 10-4 in the Six Rivers Conference and 12-5 overall with the loss. Monticello-New Glarus played a nonconference game at Evansville on May 12 and returned to Six Rivers conference action on May 13 on the road against conference co-leader Barneveld.
Belleville Wildcats Drop Two
The Belleville Wildcats fell to 3-12 overall on the season after dropping a pair of games this past week. On May 9, the Wildcats were shut out by Lakeside Lutheran 11-0 in five innings at Belleville. Ava Benash pitched three innings and Bryn Prochaska pitched two innings. Between them, the Wildcats only allowed one earned run on five hits. But the Wildcats committed six errors which allowed 10 unearned runs to score. At the plate, Benash went 2x3 and Prochaska went 2x2.
On May 10, Belleville lost to Cambridge, 6-5 in Capitol South action at Cambridge. The Wildcats led, 5-4 going into the bottom of the seventh inning when the Blue Jays scored two runs to get the win. Story Fossum took the loss, giving up six runs, in which only two were earned. Belleville committed four errors. Brynn Ennis got a hit, an RBI, and scored a run. Sophie Fossum and Jocelyn Raven each got a base hit and scored a run. The loss puts the Wildcats record at 1-6 in the Capitol South. The Wildcats hosted Capitol South conference leader Marshall on May 13.
Juda-Albany Gets 5-3 Win Over Pecatonica
The Juda-Albany Panthers went on the road on got a 5-3 win over the Pecatonica Vikings in Six Rivers softball at Blanchardville on May 8. Jubany got on the board in the first inning when freshman Ryleigh Brown scored on a bad hop single. The Panthers got three runs in the third inning as sophomore Phoenix Homan drove in a pair of runs with a single and junior Rianna Sullivan got an RBI single to make it 4-0 in favor of the Panthers. Meanwhile, Jubany pitcher Emerson Briggs retired the first nine batters she faced through the third inning. The Vikings got on the board in the fourth inning when sophomore Katelyn Jorenby tripled and scored on junior Brooklyn Johnsrud’s sacrifice fly, making it 4-1. Brown’s RBI single in the sixth inning made it 5-1 before an RBI triple by Diana Hendrickson and an RBI single by Mikaela Gross in the sixth made the final Juda-Albany 5, Pecatonica 3. Juda-Albany coach Bill Davis likes the way his team is playing, but said they have a grueling schedule coming up. “We’ve got seven games next week. With our pitching, we’ll see what we can do and get primed up for the tournament run,” said Davis. The Panthers have conference games against conference leader Barneveld at home on May 12, and at home against Pecatonica again on May 13. Pecatonica played at home against Highland on May 9 and River Ridge on May 10. Results were unavailable. The win put Juda-Albany’s record at 7-7 in the Six Rivers, and 10-8 overall. Pecatonica dropped to 3-8 in the conference and 6-11 overall.
Belmont Pulls Away In 12-4 Win Over Argyle-Black Hawk
The Belmont Braves scored seven runs in the seventh inning to turn a close game into a 12-4 win over the Argyle-Black Hawk Orioles in Six Rivers softball on May 8 at Argyle. The Orioles got to within 5-3 in the sixth inning, but the Braves combined 12 hits with six errors by Argyle-Black Hawk in the game to pull away. Brianna Wilhelmson, Ava Wiegel, and Brinley Meinert each got an RBI for the Orioles while Mya McNett hit a triple and stole three bases. Belmont is the No. 1 ranked team in the Wisconsin Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association poll and the top team in the Six Rivers along with Barneveld. Argyle-Black Hawk fell to 2-12 in the Six Rivers and 6-15 overall. The Orioles played at Pecatonica on May 12 and at Southwestern on May 13.
Darlington Wins By Forfeit Over Boscobel
The Darlington Redbirds played a SWAL conference game at Boscobel on May 8 and won 23-1 in three innings. Officially, the game will go down as a 7-0 forfeit win for the Redbirds as Boscobel had only eight players and played without a second baseman. Darlington’s only other win also came at home against Boscobel, a 20-0 victory on April 14. The forfeit win snapped a seven game losing streak for the Redbirds. Darlington improved to 2-8 in SWAL conference play with the win, 2-14 overall. Darlington hosted Southwestern in a conference game on May 12.
