BENTON — After falling to the Zephyrs 5-4 on a walk-off triple in the top of the ninth on Thursday, May 11, Argyle brought out the bats for a 9-5 win over Benton-Shullsburg in a WIAA regional quarterfinal game on Thursday, May 18.
The Orioles pounded out 13 hits — six of which were for extra bases — and collected seven RBIs.
Both teams scored four runs in the first. Ava Wiegel hit a two-RBI double to center, scoring Mya McNett and Sara Helfvogt. With two outs, Anna Moore singled to center to bring home Hannah Gierhart and Ella Gierhart.
Argyle kept the momentum on its side with two more runs in the second. McNett and Helfvogt lined back-to-back doubles, and Helfvogt came around to score on an error.
The Orioles added on three insurance runs in the final two innings. In the sixth, McNett led off with a double to center. Helfvogt brought her home with a bunt single to the first-base side. On the same play, Helfvogt took second on an error. Ava Wiegel then drove her home with a single to center. McNett tallied her fourth hit of the game with an RBI triple in the seventh.
She finished the night 4-for-5 at the plate with three doubles and a single. McNett also picked up the win, scattering 11 hits for three earned runs. She struck out six batters and walked three. Helfvogt, Wiegel, Moore and Sam Kammes also recorded multiple hit games. Wiegel drove in a team-best three RBIs, followed by Moore with two.
With the win, Argyle advanced to the regional semifinal on Tuesday, May 23 against Highland. The Cardinals ended the regular season ranked No. 3 in Division 5. Highland previously defeated Argyle 7-1 on Thursday, April 6.
Redbirds’ season comes to an end in regionals
MAZOMANIE — Wisconsin Heights scored in the bottom of the first, proving to be the only run the team needed as the Vanguards defeated Darlington 6-0 in the WIAA regional quarterfinal on Thursday, May 18.
The Redbirds collected just four hits, two of which came from Sydney Wiegel. Sophie Wiegel and Lylah Norgard were responsible for the remaining hits. Sophie Wiegel took the loss, giving up four earned runs on 10 hits. She struck out three and walked four.
Darlington ended its season 2-19 overall and 0-14 in the SWAL Conference. Their wins came against Six Rivers East opponents Monticello-New Glarus 2-1 and Argyle 9-3.
