MONROE — Noah Becker, a 2020 Monroe High School graduate, finished just four strokes off lead in the boys 16- to 18-year-old division at a Wisconsin PGA Junior tournament at Monroe Golf Club July 28.
Becker’s finish of 15-over-par 85 was four behind champion Alec Sosnowski of Verona and sixth overall in his age group. He finished with nine pars on the day, but had five bogeys, two double-bogeys and two triple-bogeys.
Freeport’s Lane Pierson was seventh at 18-over-par, finishing his day with five pars. Ty Ready of New Glarus shot par on four holes and finished 15th (+30), with fellow New Glarus golfer Luke Brecklin taking 18th (+35). Brecklin had two pars and a birdie on the long 17th.
In the boys 14- to 15-year-old division, Monroe’s Berton Leach was 17th (+36), with a par on the 14th hole. In all, 37 boys and six girls participated in the tournament.
Two days later at Blackwolf Run in Kohler, 53 golfers took part in the action, with Paul Lynch (+2) of Trevor edging Kyle Bengston of Woodruff and Mickey Keating of Sun Prairie by a stroke.
Becker, who will play at UW-Parkside in college, finished tied for 32nd at 18-over-par. He had a birdie on the par-5 16th hole and added five pars in the round. A quadruple-bogey on the par-3 17th kept him from finishing higher in the pack.
At a tournament Aug. 5 at Evansville, Pierson finished tied for 16th at 21-over-par, two shots ahead of Becker in the boys 16-to-18 age group. Darien’s Daniel Romano (+5) defeated Verona’s Jake Rebholz in a shootout to win the tournament. Leach was 13th in his age group at 22-over-par.
Edelweiss Chalet Country Club in New Glarus held the Junior Tour event July 16. Pierson finished tied for fourth (+9) in the 16-18 age group, while Monticello’s Peter Gustafson was tied for 10th at 12-over-par. Zak Arnett of New Glarus took 17th (+16), with Ready two shots back in 20th. Leach was tied for 18th at 22-over-par in the 14-15 age group.
