ALBANY — Three former Comets were recently inducted into the Albany High School Hall of Fame — Glenn “Lefty” Brewer, Denny Ruef and Tyler Dahl. The trio was to be honored during halftime of the Dec. 14 girls basketball game against Argyle.
Brewer graduated in 1962, earning varsity letters in baseball, basketball, cross country and track and field. He was inducted as an athlete.
Former Albany basketball coach Phil Hahn started the cross country program in the fall of 1960 — Brewer’s junior season. Brewer became the first Comet to qualify for the state meet with a berth that first season — when there was only one division in the state — and finished fourth-place overall. The next season, Brewer helped lead the entire team to state, where the Comets finished sixth, and Brewer again was fourth. In the spring 1962 track and field season, Brewer qualified for state in the one-mile run, finishing fifth overall.
After high school, Brewer continued running at UW-Platteville, earning seven letters in cross country and track. The Pioneers won two conference championships and Brewer twice ran at the national cross country championships in Omaha, Nebraska.
Ruef, a 1968 graduate, was inducted as an athlete and significant contributor to Albany Comets Athletics. Like Brewer, Ruef earned varsity letters in baseball, cross country, basketball and track.
As a senior, Ruef was named to the State Line League All-Conference team as a point guard after leading the Comets to the district championship.
Following graduation, Ruef went on to be a coach and official in the community. From 1973-1988, Ruef coached boys basketball for fifth- and sixth-graders. He emphasized the pick-and-roll and for players to use their weak hand for dribbling — typically their left. Ruef was also an official for 25 years.
Dahl was a 2016 Albany graduate, earning 12 varsity letters during his high school career.
Dahl was thrice an all-conference cross country runner and a two-time WIAA state qualifier — in 2013 as an individual, and 2014 as a team qualifier. In his running career he received Rookie of the Year, Most Improved and MVP during his four seasons. In the spring, Dahl played baseball and ran track and field. He was a two-time all-conference selection at shortstop and in track won multiple conference championships and was a sectional qualifier in relays and as a sprinter.
An all-around athlete, Dahl’s biggest accomplishments came on the hardwood, where he finished second for career points in school history (1,376). A four-year starter, Dahl was named all-conference three times. As a senior he was named Six Rivers East Player of the Year after averaging 24.8 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals per game. Dahl was named to the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association All-State team and was a WBCA All-Star team member in 2016.
