MONROE - With two of his top three singles players out with injury, Monroe girls tennis coach Tim Walsh shuffled his lineup and the Cheesemakers lost two matches in the Freeport Quad Saturday.
Freeport just edged Monroe 4-3 and Belvidere North knocked off the Cheesemakers 7-0. Each match was played as a 10-point one set. Monroe junior Eva Priewe was shifted to No. 1 singles and she won the Freeport match 10-2. She played at No. 1 singles in place of senior Chelsea Miller, who has a back injury. Monroe junior Katie Demianiuk, who usually plays No. 3 singles, missed the tournament due to a strained muscle in her shoulder and the Cheesemakers didn't field a No. 4 doubles team. At No. 2 singles, freshman Ashley Placek lost 10-7 and Maggie Setterstrom at No. 3 singles won 10-1 against the Pretzels.
"It's great to see the growth of the freshmen," Walsh said. "We had to shuffle some people around. They will be the future leaders of the team. Both of the freshmen have a couple of wins under their belt now and that will give them confidence."
The Cheesemakers' No. 1 senior doubles team of Erin Gellings and Paige Prien defeated the Pretzels' top duo 10-3. At No. 2 doubles, Morgan Quinn and Amber Jenson lost 10-6. The No. 3 doubles team of Maija Liimatainen and Hannah Zweifel lost 10-4.
"I have high hopes for the No. 1 doubles team," Walsh said. "They are the most experienced."
Belvidere North defeated the Cheesemakers 7-0, and the match against Dixon was called due to weather. Setterstrom, playing Belvidere North's No. 3 singles player, lost 8-7 before the match was called. Gellings and Prien at No. 1 doubles lost a close match to Belvidere North 10-7.
The Cheesemakers finished just two matches against Dixon before it was called. Placek at No. 2 singles won 10-2, and Gellings and Prien at No. 1 doubles won 10-1.
Monroe will host Fort Atkinson today and then host Madison Edgewood on Thursday.
Walsh expects to have Demianiuk back as early as today against Fort Atkinson.
"She is ahead of schedule," he said of Demianiuk. "She is a really good tennis player. I will be happy to have her back."
Madison Edgewood will be a challenge on Thursday.
"To be quite honest we are not as talented because we just don't have the numbers," Walsh said. "Some teams have 25 to 30 JV players and can have competitions, and we have six."
