WESTBY - No area wrestlers qualified for state at the WIAA Division 3 Westby sectional Saturday.
Several wrestlers didn't go down without a fight and just missed a trip to state at the Kohl Center Feb. 24-26. Darlington senior Colton Hackett (35-9) finished fourth at 189 pounds. Hackett defeated Brookwood's Allen Suhr 9-1. He then lost a heartbreaker in the semifinals to Orfordville Parkview's Justin Graham 10-8 in overtime.
A win in the semifinals would have assured Hackett of a top three finish and a trip to state. After winning by an injury default in the consolation semifinals, Hackett put himself in a position to qualify for state again. Royall's Christian Moore pinned him in 5 minutes, 42 seconds in a third place match.
It was another heartbreaker for Darlington senior Brandon Heins (215). Heins defeated Mineral Point's Brenyn Schmit 7-2 and then he lost a tough semifinal match to La Crosse Aquinas' Lucas Shappell 3-0. In the consolation semifinals, he defeated Brookwood's Alan Neumann 6-5. Heins lost a third place match to Weston-Ithaca's Clayton Jennings 1-0.
Pecatonica-Argyle junior Eli Davis (145) went 1-2, but wasn't able to wrestle back for third place. Davis (27-11) pinned Hillsboro's Brandon Sebranek in 3:06 in his first round match. Lancaster's Ethan Soderstrom then defeated Davis 10-2 in the semifinals. In the consolation semifinals, Westby's Ben Hauser defeated Davis 14-11.
Pecatonica-Argyle senior Ross Gilbertson, at heavyweight, also reached the semifinals, but couldn't pull out a win. Gilbertson (22-7) pinned Weston-Ithaca's Ian Honer in 1:40 in the first round. DeSoto's Cole Johnson pinned Gilbertson in 1:10 in the semifinals. In the consolation semifinals, Boscobel's Dalton Beinborn pinned Gilbertson in 5:41.
Pecatonica-Argyle had three other wrestlers including senior Chris James (135), senior Tyler Francois (140) and senior Ian Sigg (189) close out their seasons at the sectional by losing matches.
Black Hawk junior Michael Walker lost to Riverdale's Tyler Reynolds 6-3 in the first round. Weston-Ithaca's Clayton Jennings pinned Walker in 2:43 in the consolation semifinals. Darlington junior Bo Brunkow was pinned by Weston-Ithaca's Nick Laack in 1:38.
