Guards propel Albany

ALBANY - The Albany boys basketball team got a big lift from two guards in the first quarter to hang on to a 45-40 win over Juda Tuesday in a WIAA Division 5 regional quarterfinal game.

Albany junior Tyler Dahl and senior Mitchell Trow combined to score 14 points to lead the Comets to a 14-4 run. Dahl scored nine of his game-high 24 points in the first quarter and Trow had five of his nine points in the first.

"Our two guards - Tyler and Mitchell got us going on the right foot," Albany coach Derik Doescher said. "Tyler is a tone-setter who gets to the rim. It got the home crowd going."

With the win, Albany (11-12) advances to play at top-seeded Williams Bay in a regional semifinal game Friday.

The Comets used a 2-3 zone and packed the lane. Juda (8-15) sliced the Comets lead to five points at the half, 20-15.

Juda sophomore Matt Schmitt scored a team-high 14 points and sophomore Skylar Stuckey added nine points.

Albany junior Cole Trapp scored all nine of his points in the second half.

Doescher is looking forward to playing Williams Bay Friday. Albany is 5-1 on the road in conference games this year.

"We have confidence that we can compete at an elite level," Doescher said. "We have played well on the road this year. We are a No. 4 seed and the pressure is on Williams Bay. Hopefully, we can go out there loose and upset them."



Cuba City 64, New Glarus 41

CUBA CITY - Finding a way to beat the 2-3 zone proved to be a challenge for New Glarus in a 64-41 loss to Cuba City in a WIAA Division 4 regional quarterfinal game Tuesday.

Cuba City played a 2-3 zone and raced out to an 18-6 lead in the first quarter. The Glarner Knights (10-13) cut the Cubans' lead to seven points, 22-15, in the second quarter. The Cubans closed the second quarter on a 10-0 run to take a 17-point lead at the half.

"We got off to a slow start," New Glarus coach Travis Sysko said. "They zoned us and we had trouble with it. We had trouble finding shots."

New Glarus junior Gavin Binger scored a team-high 13 points.

Cuba City's Zach Gaines scored a game-high 19 points and Ben Burkholder chipped in 15 points. Cuba City (18-5) advances to play at second-seeded Darlington (19-3) in a regional semifinal game Friday. Darlington had a first-round bye as the No. 2 seed.



Abundant Life 69, Argyle 55

MADISON - The Argyle boys basketball team had third-seeded Madison Abundant Life on the ropes for the first half.

Abundant Life came back from a 11-point halftime deficit to beat Argyle 69-55 in a WIAA Division 5 regional quarterfinal game. The Challengers used a 23-8 run in the third quarter to take control of the game.

Argyle junior Kyle Emberson scored a team-high 20 points and junior teammate Riley Ostby had 19 points.

Abundant Life's Spencer Wright scored a game-high 27 points and Will Donohoe added 17 points. With the loss, Argyle finishes the season 6-16.



Williams Bay 70, Monticello 38

WILLIAMS BAY - Top-seeded Williams Bay came out with a big first-quarter surge to roll to a 70-38 win over Monticello.

Williams Bay raced out to a 15-4 lead in the first quarter and led by 14 points at the half. Williams Bay sealed the victory by outscoring the Ponies 19-10 in the third quarter.

Monticello senior Ben May scored a game-high 28 points. May finished his career with 1,232 points. With the loss, Monticello finishes the season 1-22.

Williams Bay was led by John Higgins who scored a team-high 22 points.



Edgerton 55, Brodhead 33

EDGERTON - Brodhead junior leading scorer Ned Slocum left the court on a stretcher after a head injury and the Cardinals lost to Edgerton in a WIAA Division 3 regional quarterfinal 55-33.

Edgerton (7-15) jumped out to a 15-4 lead in the first quarter. The Cardinals trailed by 10 points at the half. The Crimson Tide went on a 19-10 run in the third quarter to seal the win. Brodhead's Parker Johnson scored a team-high 11 points and nailed three 3-pointers. Slocum added eight points for the Cardinals.

Edgerton was led by Brennan Deegan who scored a game-high 13 points. Edgerton's Jake Ziemet added 10 points.

The Pecatonica boys basketball team's game was postponed. Pecatonica will host seventh-seeded Cassville at 7 p.m. today. Black Hawk also had its regional quarterfinal game postponed. Black Hawk will host seventh-seeded Johnson Creek at 7 p.m. today.
