MONROE - Walks continue to plague the Monroe baseball team.

Four Monroe pitchers combined for 16 walks and Milton took advantage, topping the Cheesemakers 18-5 in six innings Friday. With the loss, Monroe drops to 0-3 Badger South.

Monroe junior Max Lange started on the mound and gave up nine runs, but only earned four on three hits in 1 2/3 innings. He struck out two and walked nine.

"They need to get in the mindset of setting the tone," Monroe coach Eric Losenegger said. "I think right now we are pitching to miss bats. We need to pitch to contact and let the defense make plays."

The game was originally scheduled to be played at Milton but was moved to Monroe because the Red Hawks' field wasn't in good enough condition to play. Milton's Brock Nickel went 3-for-3 with three RBI. The Red Hawks broke the game open with a nine-run second inning.

Monroe junior Jared Cline pitched 1 1/3 innings in relief and gave up one run on one hit and walked one. Junior teammate Jared Baumgartner tossed 1 2/3 innings and gave up two runs on two hits, while striking out three and walking one. Sophomore Jared Dillon pitched 1 1/3 innings and gave up six earned runs on five hits, struck out three and walked five.

Monroe junior Trevor Meier went 2-for-3 with one RBI to lead the Cheesemakers at the plate. Junior Nick Benkert was 1-for-1 with two walks and one RBI.

Losenegger said the use of four pitchers was not in the plan.

"Max's pitch count got up there and we used Jared Cline and Jared Baumgartner an inning here or there to try to get through it, but they are going to pitch tomorrow (today)," Losenegger said.

Monroe plays Portage in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. today.

In other area action, Pecatonica split a doubleheader with Shullsburg-Benton. Shullsburg won the first game 2-0 and Pecatonica won the second 12-1.
