MONROE - Mother Nature did the Cheesemakers a big favor.
Originally scheduled for April 8, Monroe's non-conference tennis bout with Badger North champion Waunakee went 5-2 to the Warriors. Monroe (6-4) played well enough to win initially but fell short just two days before the Badger Conference Tournament.
"At one time it looked like we would win 5-2, as we won the first sets at No. 2 singles and No. 1 and No. 2 doubles only to lose all three in three sets," Monroe coach Jim Bartholf said.
Matt Le outlasted Kyle Meier in the No. 2 singles match before falling, 6-0, 6-4, in the next two sets. Seniors Matt Turek and Levi Janssens won their first set, 6-2, before losing the next two 6-4 and 7-6, while Mark Hoesly and Jim Kundert lost the final two set s6-3 and 6-4 after a 6-4 first-set win.
No 3 singles player Artem Bralgin beat Gabe Stauffacher, 6-2, 6-4, and Nick Hendrickson and Trevor Arn also won their No. 3 doubles match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.
