MCFARLAND - The Cardinals improved their record to 3-0 with a win at McFarland Friday 40-3.

Coach B.J. Bockhop said his team is moving "in the right direction," but there is always room for improvement.

"We just have to keep tightening up the little things, day-by-day," he said.

Brodhead-Juda pulled ahead early in the first quarter putting up 19 points, then eight in the second, seven in the third and six points in the fourth quarter.

The teams only tied in penalties costing each 65 yards.

Senior Brennan Bescup completed 3 of 8 passes for 53 passing yards with senior Brady Colden taking 30 of those yards.

Brodhead-Juda played a forward-forcing game with 366 rushing yards. Senior Griffin Day had the most rushing yards with 115

The Cardinals play East Troy next week in Brodhead.

Black Hawk 14, Shullsburg 6

SHULLSBURG - Black Hawk senior Heath Butler scored the game-winning 1-yard touchdown run with about 4 minutes to go to give the Warriors a 14-6 win over Shullsburg Friday.

The game-winning touchdown was set up by Black Hawk senior running back Shawn Woodruff's 75-yard run.

"It was a defensive struggle," Black Hawk coach Cory Milz said. "We weren't happy with how we played in the first half. Shullsburg was really enthused. We challenged our kids at halftime. We have been waiting for Shawn to explode. He's a workhorse."

Woodruff rushed for 244 yards on 31 carries and Butler scored two touchdowns to propel the Warriors.

With the win, Black Hawk (2-1, 2-0 Six Rivers) moves into first-place tie in the conference with Pecatonica-Argyle (3-0, 2-0). Cassville stunned Potosi. Both the Chieftains and Comets are one game back.

"Our young defense did a very good job against an explosive Shullsburg offense that put up about 400 total yards against Potosi and about 500 yards against Belmont."

Darlington 49, Iowa-Grant 12

LIVINGSTON - Darlington senior running back Jason Singer rushed for 206 yards on 19 carries and scored one touchdown to propel the Redbirds to a 49-12 thrashing of Iowa-Grant in the Southwest Wisconsin Activities League opener.

Darlington senior fullback Myles Leahy scored three touchdowns in his first game this season. Leahy had a 1-yard TD run late in the first quarter to give the Redbirds a 6-0 lead. Singer had an 18-yard TD run to give the Redbirds a 14-0 lead.

"Myles made numerous pancake blocks," Darlington coach Scott Zywicki said. "I feel like we made some significant defensive gains. I think we are heading in the right direction."

With the win, Darlington improves to 2-1, 1-0 SWAL. Zywicki also credited the offensive line and Hunter Johnson for making key blocks.

"It all starts up front," Zywicki said. "I think with our offensive and defensive lines we really dominated in the trenches. Hunter Johnson is instrumental on our sweep series. Not only is he a load of a back, but he will go out there and destroy anyone in his way."

Darlington senior Cole McDonald completed 4 of 4 passes for 60 yards and he also scored a touchdown on the ground. Singer had two receptions for 40 yards.

Evansville-ALbany 40, Beloit Turner 7

EVANSVILLE - Evansville-Albany came away with its first win of the year Friday, defeating Turner 40-7 in Beloit.

Evansville-Albany coach Ron Grovesteen said his team needed a boost after their loss to Brodhead-Juda last week. The Blue Devils (1-2) scored seven points in the first quarter, 14 points in the second, six in the third and 13 in the fourth.

The Blue Devils had 338 total yards. Evansville-Albany had 211 rushing yards, with Nate Redders tallying 135 of those yards and scoring one touchdown.

The Devils completed nine of 11 passes for 127 yards.

"We are awfully young yet and still need to work on our running game," he said.

Columbus 34, NG-M 14

COLUMBUS - New Glarus-Monticello coach Desie Breadon said his team's 34-14 loss to Columbus Friday was a compounded issue of injuries and Columbus players executing drives.

Breadon said the team had "a couple guys get dinged up," but the Glarner Knights escaped without serious injuries. He said one player had to have his ankle taped up and another player's head was looked at, but he did not expect long-term problems.

Breadon said the first half was an even match at 14-14, but Columbus pulled ahead after Breadon had to shift players around due to the injuries. Columbus led the rest of the game, scoring 40 points in the second half.

"They were big and they were fast, they're just hands down one of the best teams this year," Breadon said.

This loss drops New Glarus-Monticello to an 0-3 record.

Pec-Argyle 41, Desoto 6

BLANCHARDVILLE - Pecatonica-Argyle won against De Soto 41-6, bringing the Vikings record to 3-0.
