BRODHEAD - Championship teams usually have more then one go-to player and showcase a stingy defense.
The Brodhead boys basketball team found the winning formula on both fronts in a 54-41 win over Beloit Turner in a WIAA Division 3 regional semifinal game Friday night. Beloit Turner clogged Brodhead senior J.J. Panoske down low with a box-and-one defense. Brodhead senior Carson Scheidegger scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Cardinals.
"Someone has to step up to score," Scheidegger said. "Whoever gets the open shots that is who will do it. Tonight it was just me."
With the win, Brodhead (14-9) advances to the Big Foot regional title game where the Cardinals will take on No. 1 seed Clinton tonight.
The Trojans hit 5 of their first eight shots and shot 45.4 percent in the first half (10-for-22) in building a 21-20 halftime lead. The Cardinals shutdown the Trojans in the second half limiting them to just 23.3 percent shooting (7-for-30).
"At halftime we really talked about stepping up on defense," Scheidegger said. "We really thought that is how we were going to win the game."
Scheidegger also received a lot of help in the second half. Panoske scored 11 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter. He also had 11 rebounds and three blocked shots. Brodhead junior David Earleywine, who had a cast removed from his broken hand, scored eight points and senior Brandon McKee scored seven points and had three offensive rebounds in the second half.
"We said if we were going to win several guys would have to step up," Brodhead coach Brian Kammerer said. "Scheidegger did it with his shooting. McKee did it with his hustle plays. David Earleywine and Michael Peterson did it with their defense. The only talk this week was Beloit Turner. We knew it would be a dogfight."
The Cardinals went on a 10-0 run from the end of the third quarter into the fourth to take the lead. Scheidegger ignited the spurt by drilling a 3-pointer late in the third quarter to give the Cardinals a 31-28 lead going into the fourth quarter. He scored on a layup and Earleywine scored on a putback to start the fourth to give the Cardinals a 35-28 lead. The run culminated with Panoske knocking down a 3-pointer to give the Cardinals a 38-28 lead. Panoske, a University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee recruit, had two dunks including a thunderous one hand jam late in the fourth quarter to cap the win.
"I think the main reason why I went off is we had four guys stepping up and opening things up," Panoske said. "We knew they would come in and play that box-and-one. They couldn't stay in that box-and-one because Carson Scheidegger was hitting shots."
Beloit Turner senior Tevien Pinckney scored a team-high 16 points. The Cardinals limited Pinckney to just five points in the second half.
"They (Earleywine and Peterson) did a great job of chasing Pinckney around the gym," Kammerer said. "He is a great player. That just shows you the type of kid David Earleywine is."
It will be a short turnaround for Brodhead. The Cardinals are planning a shootaround for 11 a.m. today before the regional championship game against Clinton.
"I think ever since we lost by 30 points to them we have been wanting another game against them," Panoske said. "No one has talked about it. Now that it is here a lot of guys are excited about it. We just have to get locked in as a team."
