MONTICELLO - Backed by senior Claire Bruns no-hitter, the Monticello softball team started their postseason play with a bang in an emphatic 10-0 win over the visiting Black Hawk Warriors.

The Six Rivers Eastern champions started off the game by scoring four runs in the bottom of the first to climb out to any early lead. With Bruns on the mound, the Ponies cruised to the victory.

"It's a good way to start the tournament," Monticello coach Duane Garrison said. "She (Bruns) was hitting the corners on her pitches and throwing her change-up for strikes. She was in total control tonight."

In her five innings of work, Bruns allowed two pop-ups and eight ground-outs, while not allowing a single walk. She finished the game with five strikeouts.

At the plate Marissa Berg finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a double. Freshman Jessie Garrison finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs while teammate Clare Gietzel ended the night 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

The Ponies next opponent will be Argyle on Thursday in the regional championship. Monticello (20-2) won both the regular season matchups against the Orioles.

"As the old saying goes, it's hard to beat a team three times," Garrison said. "Both teams know each other very well, so it should make for a good matchup."

Argyle 3, Juda-Albany 1

ARGYLE - Despite collecting fewer hits, the Argyle softball team managed to pull away with a 3-1 victory over Juda-Albany in both teams' second games of the postseason.

"I felt very fortunate," Orioles coach Heidi Ganshert said. "You usually don't win if you don't have more hits than the other team. They (Juda-Albany) played a great game, and we knew that they would be hard to beat."

Juda-Albany got on the scoreboard first with one run that came in the fourth inning, but in the sixth inning, costly errors proved to be detrimental. Three of Juda-Albany's five errors were committed in the sixth inning, which allowed Argyle's Jenna Langmeier, Jessica Geissbuhler, and Jessica Treuthardt to get on base and ultimately score all three of their team's runs.

Treuthardt pitched all seven innings for the Orioles, allowing one run, five hits, two walks and two strikeouts. Geissbuhler had the only hits for Argyle (18-6) and finished the night 2-for-3.

In her last game, Juda-Albany senior Tabatha Davis pitched six innings, allowing two hits and three walks to go along with four strikeouts.

Argyle will travel to Monticello on Thursday in the regional final.

Brodhead 4, Wis. Heights 0

BRODHEAD - Behind Brooke Boegli's performance on the mound, the Brodhead softball team ran away with a 4-0 victory in their regional semifinal against Wisconsin Heights.

The junior hurler pitched a one-hit shutout as her team advanced to take on No. 1 seed Parkview in Thursday's regional final.

The Cardinals collected six hits en route to scoring one run in the first inning, two in the third and one in the sixth, as Boegli limited the visiting Vanguards to nothing more than spectators.

In seven innings of work, Boegli finished with one hit and one walk, while striking out 12 batters.

Alissa Hantke (2-for-3, one double, one triple), Karina Rosheisen (2-for-3, one triple), and Taylor Gerlach (2-for-3, one double) led the Cardinals offensively.
