SOUTH WAYNE - Black Hawk's girls basketball team picked up its third win of the season Monday, soundly beating Warren (Ill.) 75-50 in non-conference action.

"It was kind of a rough game," Black Hawk head coach Mike Flanagan said of the teams' combined 35 fouls. "We've been out of position defensively the first couple of games, and we have to understand that we have to get better in our fundamentals in practice every day."

Kim Wellnitz led the home team with 20 points. Paige Butler wasn't far behind at 15.

"My first year we had Paige Butler as our main scorer, but every night we didn't have a whole lot else. Kim came out last year and had a breakout season. When you add a third person in double figures every game, that really helps you out," Flanagan said.

Black Hawk started relatively slow in the first quarter and trailed 7-5 five minutes into the game. From there, Wellnitz and Butler took over. Black Hawk finished the period with a 15-7 lead that was extended to 33-21 at halftime.

"Early on we were awfully flat. I called a timeout in the first half and I just said to the girls, 'Wake up, you're in a basketball game right now and teams are not going to lay down for you,'" Flanagan said. "You have to find a way to bring enough intensity and challenge that team to come after you."

Wellnitz finished the first half with 13 points, Butler with 10. In the third quarter, the momentum shifted completely in favor of the home team.

Warren failed to break the press on numerous occasions, and outside of Kayla Briggs (24 points) and Megan Rogers (nine points), Warren failed to put the ball in the basket with any consistency.

Black Hawk scored 25 points in the frame and jumped its lead to 23-points at 58-35 with just one quarter to play.

With the big lead, and some light foul trouble for its starters, Flanagan was able to plug in as many players into the game as he could.

"We had a lot of different kids in the scorebook tonight, which is nice. We don't want to have to rely on one kid to do the scoring," Flanagan said.

Ten Black Hawk players scored, with Rachel Rygh joining Wellnitz and Butler in double digits. Rygh scored all 10 of her points in the fourth quarter.

"Rachel Rygh is only a sophomore and she found a way to get 10 points. We have some different kids who can contribute. We're still trying to figure out some things and to get that consistent third scorer," Flanagan said.

Maria Meives scored nine points, Gabi Lehner had six (including two coast-to-coast buckets on steals), Katie Place scored five, Hailey Meier had three. Melissa Wellnitz and Cassie Jorgenson each had two points.

Senior guard Savannah Ernzen was held scoreless all game off the bench until the final buzzer blew - that's when her 30-foot heave-ho from downtown South Wayne banked in for her three points.

Black Hawk (3-0) goes back to practice before Thursday night's conference opener at home against Monticello.
