SOUTH WAYNE - A downpour let loose after the 1,600-meter run, sending dozens of athletes scurrying for cover just four races into the Black Hawk track meet Thursday. The meet was ultimately canceled.
"This spring has been absolutely horrendous for trying to get things in," Black Hawk track coach Eric Erickson said. "Things didn't turn out as bad after the rain as we thought after everyone got soaked, and we had one runner fall in the 100."
Erickson said the meet will not be rescheduled. There is just over one week until the Six Rivers Conference meet at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville May 14.
"The other teams are all busy," Erickson said. "River Ridge pulled out of the meet because they were going to another meet. At this time of year, it's really crazy with athletics and all of the other activities going on at school."
Pecatonica-Argyle sophomore Zander Brunker won the 100 (12.0 seconds) and teammate Mamadou Demba took second (12.1). Black Hawk's Colby Argall (12.1) just got clipped by a few hundredths of a second and placed third.
Southwestern's Von Lacy won the 110 high hurdles (19.1). Pecatonica-Argyle took first in the 3,200 relay.
In the girls 100, Black Hawk senior Haley Gertsch finished first (13.3) and Pecatonica-Argyle's Val Carr placed second (13.6). Belmont's Holly Rath won the 100 hurdles (19.4), which was just ahead of Black Hawk's Emily Triem, who took second (19.5).
Pecatonica-Argyle swept the top two spots in the girls high jump. Adisyn Noble won the high jump after clearing 4 feet, 6 inches and Taetum Pagel took second (4-4). Potosi's Grace Morgan won the shot put (32-5 ½).
