MONROE - Baraboo's Tom Ginther carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning, and the Thunderbirds handed the Monroe High School baseball team a 6-0 loss Thursday.
Ginther, a North Dakota State Division II recruit, used a powerful fastball to overpower the Cheesemakers. Ginther struck out 12 and tossed a two-hitter.
"He (Ginther) threw hard, and he's their No. 1 pitcher," Monroe coach Dustin Huffman said. "He is by far the best we have seen this season. His velocity is something we haven't seen yet. The first two innings we didn't put a good swing on the baseball because we were not used to that velocity."
Freshman Jared Dillon started for Monroe and pitched four innings. He gave up one earned run on three hits. He struck out two and walked five.
Monroe sophomore Dagon Rach pitched two innings in relief and gave up four runs on three hits. He walked five.
Senior Jacob Ritschard tossed one scoreless inning in relief. He struck out one and walked one.
"We wanted to give Jared and Dagon an opportunity to see what they could do," Huffman said. "It's how we are in our rotation. They both walked five, and it was probably due to a little bit of nerves. It was good to get them on the mound and get them some innings. They were able to settle in and get some experience. Hopefully, next time they throw a few more strikes."
The Thunderbirds had a four-run fifth to take a 6-0 lead.
Monroe senior Hogan Edwards singled to lead off the seventh to break up Ginther's no-hit bid. The other hit in the seventh came on freshman Nick Bansley's two-out single.
Monroe (1-1) will play a doubleheader at Mount Horeb on Saturday.
