Pecatonica 3,

Mount Horeb 2

MOUNT HOREB - Pecatonica got strong pitching and used some small ball to score three runs in the first inning to pull off a nonconference win over Mount Horeb.

Four Pecatonica pitchers combined on a seven-hitter.

Pecatonica (18-1, 11-1 Six Rivers East) used the bunt to their advantage in the first. Sophomore Colton Schraepfer walked and senior Presly Hauser was hit by a pitch. Senior Cory Linder moved both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. On a wild throw to first base, Schraepfer scored. Sophomore Carter Ruegsegger and senior Jake Dearth then each delivered safety squeeze bunts to drive in runs to give Pecatonica a 3-0 lead.

"In the first inning, we did a really nice job with our bunt game," Pecatonica coach Jim Strommen said. "We beat a really good team in Mount Horeb."

Hauser went 3-for-3.

Strommen said he used four pitchers due to the pitch-count rule and because he may want to use each one again in a rescheduled game against Black Hawk today.

Senior A.J. Hendrickson started, pitched 11⁄3 shutout innings and gave up one hit. Junior Evan Prust tossed 22⁄3 innings in relief to get the win. He gave up two runs on five hits, struck out one and walked one.
