JUDA - A scoreless second quarter was too much for the Juda boys basketball team to overcome against Argyle Tuesday night as the Orioles pulled out a 44-35 win.
Argyle took a 8-5 lead after the first quarter before breaking the game open with a 19-0 second.
"We weren't getting bad shots (in the second quarter), we just weren't making anything," Juda coach Mike Armitage said. "They were capitalizing on a lot of one-shot possessions that we had. They made a lot of good decisions on offense. That's really the tale of the tape in the second: they made better decisions."
The Panthers didn't go down lightly, though, responding with a 15-2 third quarter to cut the Argyle lead to 29-20 going into the fourth. Armitage said the team came out more focused after halftime.
"We didn't really change anything with the Xs and Os. We did the same things; we just did it with a lot more focus and energy," he said. "We got it to where we made them play in the fourth. If we don't have that quarter, they could have coasted in the fourth. In the third, we did to them what they did to us in the second, and that gave us a chance in the fourth."
After allowing Juda to get within a couple baskets in the fourth, Argyle stretched their lead back out to secure a 44-35 victory.
Christopher Severson led Argyle with 16 points, while both Kyle Emberson and Riley Ostby chipped in 10 for the Orioles. Juda was led by Cole Bauman (12 points) and Matt Trotter (11 points).
"Cole and Matt are gonna score some points, but we gotta have some other guys score," Armitage said. "We can't continue to score in the low 30s and expect to win games. That's expecting a lot of your defense. We certainly can't ask them to only allow 2 points every quarter, but we can't allow 15- or 19-point quarters."
Both teams will be back in action on Friday as part of the Six Rivers Challenge. Juda (4-11, 2-6 in Six Rivers East) takes on Shullsburg, while Argyle (7-9, 3-4) plays Highland.
Black Hawk 66, Pecatonica 47
BLANCHARDVILLE - Seth Butler scored 23 points to lead the Black Hawk boys basketball team to a win over conference rival Pecatonica, 66-47.
"Seth Butler had a huge first," said Pecatonica coach Matt Fink. "He was real aggressive, not just scoring, but getting on offensive boards, which got him some easy scoring opportunities. He really played hard and it was tough for us to match that."
Black Hawk led 20-16 after a quarter of play, and 36-26 at the half. Pecatonica outscored the Warriors by a point in the third, before Black Hawk sealed the game with a 18-8 fourth.
"We cut it to 3 with about two minutes left in the third," Fink said. "Black Hawk went on a run, they upped their defensive pressure and we didn't handle it very well at the time."
Other leading scorers for Black Hawk were Merik Meythaler (12 points) and Tyler Peterson (11). Both Meythaler and Peterson did most of their damage from behind the three-point arc, knocking down four and three 3-pointers, respectively.
Dillon Conwell led the Vikings with 14 points. Brooks Chandler had 10 for Pec, and Drew Schliem added 9.
"Conwell played real well for us," Fink said. "We thought he had a mismatch in the post, he had eight at the half."
Fink said his team needs to see some other players step up in the scoring department.
"Most teams we see really go after Schliem," he said. "We need some other guys to step up. At times Chandler has; he had 10 in the first half. They kinda took away some of our perimeter options. It seems like most nights we have a guy with 14 or 10, we just gotta find that third scoring option every night."
Pecatonica (3-11, 0-7) plays Belmont on Friday, while Black Hawk (12-1, 7-1), the seventh-ranked team in Division 5, takes on River Ridge.
Waterloo 60, New Glarus 53
NEW GLARUS - The New Glarus boys basketball team dropped a tough conference game to Waterloo Tuesday night, 60-53.
New Glarus trailed 16-14 at the end of the first quarter, but they outscored the Pirates by 3 in the second quarter to take a 23-22 halftime lead. The Glarner Knights only trailed by a point entering the fourth, but Waterloo pulled away to secure the win.
"They took the lead and never gave it back," New Glarus coach Travis Sysko said.
Gabe Noyce led New Glarus with 19 points. Spencer Jones added 15 for NG, while Patrick Elzen chipped in 11.
Sysko said he was glad to see three players in double figures, but said the team needs to focus on improving on the defensive end.
"I was happy to see three in double figures," he said. "But defensively we struggled. We had good effort. The kids played hard, we just need better execution, defending the paint and rebounding."
New Glarus (4-12, 2-3 Capitol South) has another tough test ahead of them on Friday when they host Marshall, the ninth-ranked team in Division 3.
