Katherine “Kathy” L. Reffue, age 76 of Monroe passed away on Tuesday, April 8, 2025 at SSM Hospital in Monroe.  She was born on August 3, 1948 the daughter of Kenneth and Florence (Hanewall) Johnson.  She graduated from Beloit High School.  Kathy then went on to graduate from Cosmetology and Beautician School.   She later attended UW Platteville where she received her Bachelors in Education.  On September 18, 1971 Kathy married Robert Reffue in Beloit.

Kathy was a beautician for 10 years and then she went to work in the medical records department at the Monroe Clinic.  After receiving her bachelors in teaching Kathy was a substitute teacher for many years. 

Kathy was a dedicated and well-organized volunteer throughout Monroe.  Kathy joined the Monroe Woman’s Club in 1993 and served as President from 2002-2004.  For over a decade Kathy served as Treasurer of the ever-increasing Christmas Stocking Program.  As Co-Chair of the Helen Mears Art Competition Kathy encouraged many students to nurture their artistic talents.  Service to GFWC beyond Monroe included terms as District President and State Treasurer.

Monroe Clinic greatly benefited from Kathy’s volunteer efforts.  Kathy served eight years from 2009-2017 on the Board of the Monroe Clinic & Hospital Foundation.  As part of the team of Clinic Volunteers since 2003 Kathy accumulated many hundreds of volunteer hours in support of patient needs.

Monroe Theatre Guild also benefited from Kathy’s time and talent directing and producing theatrical and musical programs for the community.  Kathy was especially proud of her collaboration with Cindy Blanc as their efforts with “Forever Plaid” generated a musical production viewed throughout the region.

For over a decade Kathy and friend, Vicki Ingwell coordinated the regular visits of the American Red Cross Bloodmobile supported by many faithful blood donors.  Kathy was an active member of the Union Presbyterian Church sharing her talent with the choir and serving on Session council as well as numerous committees.

Under Kathy’s guidance the Reffue home was always decorated festively for the changing seasons.

Kathy is survived by her husband, Robert of Monroe; brother, Norman (Sandra) Johnson of Rockton, IL; nephew, Christopher (Tiffany) Johnson of Rockford, IL; and three great-nephews, Holden, Smith, and Zane.  She was preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Margaret Johnson in infancy. 

A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, April 16, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Union Presbyterian Church with Pastor Stacy Cavanaugh officiating.  Burial will be held at a later date at Greenwood Cemetery.

A visitation will be held from 10:00 AM until the time of service at the church.  Shriner Hager Gohlke Funeral Home is assisting the family.  Condolences may be sent to the family at: shgfuneralhome.net. 

Memorials may be made in Kathy’s name to the Monroe Clinic Hospice or Monroe Christmas Stocking Fund.
