Resigns from Town Board position following sign theft conviction

MONROE — Green County Highway Commissioner Chris Narveson was recently sentenced to pay restitution and fines — but no jail time — for stealing a campaign sign planted by his opponent in the 2025 race to become chair of the New Glarus Town Board.

Narveson was convicted by a jury August 21 on two counts – misdemeanor theft and resisting or obstructing a police officer, also a misdemeanor. According to court records, his sentence for the theft charge is a $1,000 fine, plus court costs. And on the obstructing charge, he was ordered by Circuit Judge Jance Bucher to pay a $750 fine, plus any court costs.

On Wednesday, August 10, The Town of New Glarus announced that Narveson resigned his post on the Town Board, effective September 10.

Narveson had been the town board’s chair since 2015 and has been a member of the board for nearly two decades He handily defeated Rob Ready — the victim in the case and former Hazmat Team Leader for Madison Fire Department — to win reelection last April.

Narveson has said he would release a statement following the trial but none had been issued as of press time late Wednesday; and attempts to reach Narveson for comment were unsuccessful.
