MONROE - A rural Browntown woman was killed and a rural Juda man seriously injured in a near head-on collision near Monticello Thursday afternoon, March 29, according to the Green County Sheriff's Department.

Sally J. Mitchell, 58, was pronounced dead at the scene by Green County Coroner Kris Hasse.

Gary R. Davis, 65, rural Juda, was extricated from a full-size Ford pickup truck and transported by MedFlight helicopter to the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison for serious injuries suffered in the crash. He was listed in critical condition as of noon on Friday, according to the UW Hospital.

A preliminary investigation into the crash reveals Davis was headed northbound on Wisconsin 69 about one-half mile north of Monticello when he crossed the centerline and collided with a southbound Ford Fusion driven by Mitchell. Deputies were dispatched to the scene at 2:06 p.m.

Both drivers were wearing safety belts and driving at legal highway speeds, and there was no indication that alcohol was a contributing factor.

The Wisconsin State Patrol's crash reconstruction team was called to the scene to investigate the crash. Also assisting at the scene were the New Glarus Fire, Police and EMS Departments, the Monticello Fire and Police Departments and the Green County Highway Department.

The traffic fatality is the third of 2012 in Green County. Two men, Israel Lara and Arthur W. Hafferkamp, were killed in a head-on collision on Wisconsin 11/81 near Juda in late January.
