MONROE - The Monroe water utility will start its water meter replacement program in July. The replacement program will eventually affect all water utility customers.

Over the next 36 months, utility operators will install a new Automated Meter Reading system (AMR). The utility department plans to replace all of its 4,500 meters with Sensus iPERL meters for residential customers and OMN1 meters for commercial customers.

Meters typically last 20 years and the Wisconsin Public Service Commission requires utilities to replace meters within that timeframe. The meters currently used will be discontinued and parts and service will no longer be available for repairing them.

Meter replacement is mandatory and there is no cost to most property owners for the new meters. The water utility department will pay the cost of most meter installations, but customers who have deduct meters or large volume water use that does not discharge to the sanitary sewer system will be required to purchase a new deduct meter, according to a news release from the water department.

Each installation will take approximately one hour to complete. Failure to allow access to replace the meter will be handled in accordance with state code.

The utility serviceman will need access to the meter in the basement to replace it with a new meter and radio device. If the utility serviceman stops at the house and finds no one at home, a door hanger will be left. Homeowners should contact the utility and set up an appointment. On the day of the appointment, items need to be away from the meter so the operator can get in and complete the work.

Most meters will be replaced during regular business hours, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The property owner or an adult representative, age 18 or older, will need to be present.
