Veteran's service office reminds of Wis GI Bill

MONROE - The Green County Veteran's Service office wants to remind eligible veterans and their families about the Wisconsin G.I. Bill, not to be confused with the Federal G.I. Bill.

The Wisconsin G.I. Bill tuition remission program provides a waiver of tuition and fees at University of Wisconsin System and Wisconsin Technical College System schools. Eligible veterans and certain dependents, such as spouses and children, may receive the greater of eight semesters or 128

credits for technical, undergraduate, professional or graduate study.

Basic eligibility requirements are: the veteran must have been a resident of Wisconsin at time of entry into active duty military service. The veteran must have been honorably discharged.

For spouses and children, basic requirements are: the veteran is awarded a federal VA service connected disability rating of 30 percent or more, or the veteran died in the line of duty, or the veteran's death after military service is determined by the VA to be as a direct result of a service-connected condition. Any recipient must reside in the State of Wisconsin.

There is no expiration date of the benefit for the veteran.

For qualifying spouses, the benefit must be used within 10 years of the initial disability rating of 30 percent or greater. An un-remarried surviving spouse of an eligible veteran who had a child with the veteran is eligible until 10 years after the youngest child reached 18 years of age or during the first 10 years after the veteran's death, whichever is longer.
