Three people have died in separate motor vehicle wrecks within a four-day stretch this past week, and the status of two others are still unknown. Among the three dead was a teenage boy from Brodhead — the fifth death on Green County roads so far in 2026.
The first incident, a one-vehicle wreck, took place July 5 just west of Brooklyn on the south edge of Dane County, just across the county line in the Town of Oregon. There, a husband and wife from Oregon were killed on Bellbrook Road and Glenway Road outside of Brooklyn last weekend. Richard Wisden, 67, and Kim Wisden, 57, died from injuries suffered in the crash.
At about 8:55 p.m. on Sunday, July 5, the Dane County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a vehicle that crashed at the intersection, located less than two miles northwest of Brooklyn. First responders believed the Wisdens were heading northbound on Glenway Road when they lost control.
Two days later there was a two-vehicle crash southwest of Monroe. On July 7, a call came into the Green County Sheriff’s Office for a two-vehicle wreck at the intersection of Bethel Road and Franklin Road southwest of Monroe. One vehicle was upside down when first responders arrived.
Multiple ambulances were called to respond, as well as Med Flight. Two people were found unconscious, according to dispatch communications.
No health status or identification of those injured in the accident have been released as of press time on Thursday, July 9.
However, one of the victims is reportedly a 16-year-old female, Sophie, according to her mother, Vicki Vasquez. Doctors at American Family Children’s Hospital Pediatric ICU have her sedated. “She has a pelvis that is broken in multiple places and a broken part of her tailbone,” as well as internal bleeding, and multiple fractures in each arm and one leg. She also suffered severe head trauma and has needed fluid drained in order to alleviate pressure.
A GoFundMe has been set up for Sophie, and over $12,000 was raised in less than eight hours. To donate or to find out more on Sophie’s condition, go to https://tinyurl.com/4h27d5wj.
The third accident took place on Wednesday, July 8, at 10:34 p.m. just outside of Brodhead, killing the driver.
The Green County Sheriff’s Office Communication Center received an emergency call alerting to a crash in the W700 block of Ten Eyck Road in the Town of Decatur. The crash location is approximately 3/4 of a mile west of the City of Brodhead. Deputies along with Brodhead Fire Department and Brodhead EMS responded to the scene.
Preliminary investigation determined that a car driving eastbound on Ten Eyck Road left the roadway and collided with a tree. The vehicle came to a rest in the south ditch. The driver was identified as a 17-year-old male from rural Brodhead and was trapped in the vehicle. Brodhead Fire Department personnel extricated the driver, who was pronounced deceased at the scene by Green County Coroner’s Office. The driver was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash and airbags did deploy. The vehicle sustained severe overall damage and was towed from the scene.
The crash remains under investigation.
