FREEPORT — A semi vs. Dodge Neon resulted in the death of a Freeport man Nov. 10.
According to the Stephenson County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 11:40 p.m. on Nov. 10, a cellphone crash detection alert came in. Authorities responded to the area of Ill. 26 and Winneshiek Road in Rural Freeport and discovered a head-on collision between a semi-truck with a trailer and a 2005 Dodge Neon.
A preliminary investigation indicates that the Neon, driven by a 35-year-old Freeport man, was traveling southbound on Ill. 26 in the northbound traffic lane when it collided head-on with the northbound semi-truck and trailer. The driver of the Neon was the sole occupant and was deceased at the scene.
The driver of the semi-truck tractor-trailer, a 60-year-old Beloit man, was uninjured.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation and the name of the decedent is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, according to the sheriff’s office. An autopsy was scheduled for Monday, Nov. 11.
Cedarville Fire Protection District, Leamon’s Ambulance Service, the Stephenson County Coroner’s Office, and the Illinois State Police Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit assisted the Stephenson County Sheriff’s Office at the scene.
