Monticello's famous dining establishment, "Jimmies" or the "Midway," was known far and wide for its fine hamburgers. James "Jimmie" Lobs, a Greek immigrant, came to Monticello in 1906 as part of a railroad section crew. Although he "murdered" the English language, Lobs enjoyed conversations, and the Midway never saw a dull moment while he was present. By 1937 he had prospered enough to contract with the Karlen and Steinmann Lumber Co. to design and build a modern home and restaurant on the site of his old building. He moved the top half of the old Midway by trailer to Middleton, where he had an understudy begin operations for him. "All in all "James' is to be complimented for making it possible for our village to gain another building of quality, which will be a credit to the ever growing beauty of the village," it was written in the Monticello Messenger on Sept. 30, 1937. Today's M & M restaurant on Monticello's Main Street still carries on "Jimmie's" traditions.
