Monroe police ask drivers to watch out for students

MONROE - The Monroe Police warned drivers Thursday to be extra vigilant for pedestrians as the 2016-2017 school year begins.

In order to accommodate the increase in traffic while school is in session, drivers are encouraged to be extra mindful around schools, particularly near elementary schools.

Police warned of the coming increase in young pedestrians and bicyclists near school zones in a press release. Although many intersections will have crossing guards whose directions must be obeyed, others will have no guards and drivers must act with caution.

Drivers are also asked to be mindful of no-parking areas as well as a new law regarding school buses.

The new law no longer requires buses to deploy their extendable stop signs when stopping. Instead, buses are only required to flash yellow lights before they stop and red lights as they stop. However, drivers are still required to stop for a bus displaying red lights.
