MONROE - On Tuesday, the Monroe Common Council:

• Approved an agreement with financial service Ehler's & Associates to create a project plan outlining the feasibility of creating a new tax increment district along 30th Street.

• Agreed on a resolution approving special events. Main Street Monroe will host two car shows along the Square from 4-9:30 p.m. June 3 and Aug. 26. Supercows, the theme of downtown this summer, will have a kickoff event on the Square from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 4. ARC of Green County plans to host the Monroe Balloon Rally at the Green County fairgrounds June 17-18.

• Approved a beverage license to ARC of Green County in conjunction with the Monroe Balloon Festival. Malt beverages will be served throughout the fairground, while the organization will also set up a space for a wine garden.

• Voted 6-2 to approve the possession of live chickens for two separate applications; one from a resident located at the corner of 17th Avenue and 17th Street, and the other located along the 1400 block of 30th Avenue.

• Voted 7-1 in favor of hiring a contractor to perform maintenance on city fire hydrants in the downtown area. The company will sandblast decades of paint from some hydrants and repaint them.

• Proclaimed May 20 as Poppy Day because "a nation at peace must be reminded of the price of war," Mayor Louis Armstrong said.
