MONROE - On Sunday at the Monroe Swiss Singers' 49th Annual Swissfest at Turner Hall in Monroe, a special presentation was made by Vicki Sasso of Madison from the Quilts of Valor Foundation.
The national nonprofit organization awards handmade quilts to comfort and honor military veterans who have been touched by war.
Sasso presented quilts to four members of the Monroe Swiss Singers: Father Michael E. Klarer, who served as a Navy chaplain from 1989-2002 during Desert Storm; Steve Streiff, who served in Vietnam while in the Army from 1966-69; Heinz Mattmann, who served in Vietnam while in the Army from 1967-69 and then in Desert Storm while in the reserves from 1980-91; and Paul Beach, who was stationed in Germany during the Vietnam War while in the Army from 1970-73.
The red, white and blue quilts presented to each of the four men were made by local quilters from St. John's United Church of Christ in Monroe and the Monroe Courthaus Quilters.
