Green County Humane Society shelter advocates for our animals

What we do: We are a nonprofit, no-kill animal shelter. GCHS is an animal shelter and a contracted service provider for Green County, Lafayette County, and the City of Monroe. We contract with these municipalities to take in abused, stray, and lost dogs and cats (dogs only from Lafayette County). We provide basic daily needs of the animals in our care: housing, veterinary care, spay/neuter surgeries, training and socialization; and provide for their needs until they can be adopted. Our mission is to be a passionate advocate for the lives of companion animals by finding quality forever homes, providing community education and promoting responsible animal ownership.

Our organization: We have an 11-member board

of directors, 12 paid staff, 100-plus volunteers, generous donors, members and a growing network of foster homes.

What volunteers do for us: Volunteers help us here at the shelter with everyday operations, housekeeping, walking dogs, socializing cats and dogs. We also have foster homes that volunteer the time and houses to care for special needs animals and/or animals that are expecting a litter, as well as young animals needing around-the-clock care. Our volunteers also help us with fundraising events, getting them set up and organized, manning the event, and getting things taken down and cleaned up. Many of our volunteers help in more than one way - they are a great support to us here at the shelter and we are beyond grateful for all of their help.

What we need: We always welcome any new volunteers, whether here at the shelter or at an event. We would also like to continue our network of foster homes. If you would like to help in any way, contact us at the shelter. If you are unable to donate your time but would like to help, you can check out our wishlist which is posted on our website.

When and why I began volunteering: I began volunteering at the end of 2011. I became a volunteer because of my love for animals, and the need for volunteers at GCHS was there. It also gives me great fulfillment in my life, to know that I am making a difference in the lives of these great animals.

What I do as a volunteer: I cuddle and socialize with the cats to increase their chance of being adopted.

Why I enjoy volunteering: I volunteer not only because the need is there but it is also my way of giving back and helping these truly amazing animals.

One thing I've learned as a volunteer: I've learned there are a lot of animals that are in need of a loving home, and it's great that organizations, like GCHS, are there to provide wonderful service for them as they wait to find their forever homes.

If I could grant one wish for my group/organization, it would be: That every animal, present and future, that comes to the GCHS finds his/her forever home.
