BRODHEAD — Investigators continue working to determine the cause of a fast-moving weekend fire that damaged three businesses in downtown Brodhead.

No one was injured in the blaze but there was significant property damage and fire departments from throughout the region responded.

Brodhead Police received multiple emergencies calls around 3:25 p.m. Sunday, related to fire in the 1000 block of 1st Center Avenue (Wis. 11). In addition to storefronts, residential apartments are located above the street level of those impacted buildings.

Everyone, though, got out safely, officials said. The other businesses were unoccupied at the time of the fire.

Brodhead Fire District initiated mutual aid box alarm to which eight fire departments — in Green, Lafayette and Rock counties — as well as two from Illinois that responded to help battle the fire. The fire was ultimately contained at 4:40 p.m. Through the combined efforts of all the assisting firefighters, officials said, they were able to keep fire from spreading to any of the other historic buildings downtown.

Firefighters cleared the scene at 8:18 p.m. Brodhead police and fire officials are still investigating the cause of the fire and the extent of the damage.

Damaged businesses include a tattoo parlor, a photo studio, and a pizza/coffee restaurant.

At least one of those businesses remained closed Monday while officials work to determine the structure’s integrity. Meanwhile, 1st Center Ave. (Wis. 11) has been closed to vehicle traffic between 10th Street and Exchange Street until sometime late Monday, when this newspaper went to press.

Large trucks and trucks hauling oversize loads were routed onto E. 9th Ave (County T) and then onto 23rd Street to get back onto 1st Center Ave.
