MONROE - Dave Hirsbrunner resigned as Monroe's athletic director and Monroe High School special education teacher Monday, paying the district more than $6,000 as part of an undisclosed agreement.
The Monroe school board unanimously accepted Hirsbrunner's resignation in a special meeting Monday evening.
Hirsbrunner wrote a $6,390 check to the district as part of the agreement, said Jon Anderson, the district's attorney from Godfrey & Kahn of Madison.
Anderson would not reveal the purpose of the check, or comment on whether the money was some form of reimbursement for misspent funds.
"I can't comment on how to characterize that," Anderson said of the check. "I would just say it's a check as part of an agreement he wrote to the district. That information is closed session."
Hirsbrunner, who was in his sixth year as athletic director, had been on paid administrative leave since Nov. 6.
Anderson said the matter has been referred to the Green County district attorney for review.
Monroe School Board President Bob Erb declined to comment and referred questions to Anderson.
"It's a personnel matter and I can't comment," Erb said.
Hirsbrunner's wife, Cory Hirsbrunner, is superintendent of the Monroe school district.
Hirsbrunner was scheduled to make a total salary of $76,959 this year for his duties as athletic director and as a special education teacher. Monroe Business Manager Ron Olson said Hirsbrunner had a base salary of $64,406 and made $6,852 for 20 extended days he was required to work and an additional $5,701 for his extra duty as an athletic director. Olson said 85 percent of Hirsbrunner's time this year was served as athletic director.
Anderson said Hirsbrunner is not receiving any additional pay from the district in unused sick pay as part of his resignation.
Along with his duties as athletic director and as a special education teacher, Hirsbrunner coached the Monroe boys and girls cross country teams and coached boys and girls track for 16 years.
MHS Principal Chris Medenwaldt and his staff have been taking on the athletic director duties since Hirsbrunner's administrative leave began.
Anderson said a resignation agreement between Hirsbrunner and the district would be available Tuesday.
"Mr. Hirsbrunner still has to sign it," he said.
