Former governor in Monroe tonight

MONROE - Former Gov. Tony Earl will speak tonight at the Monroe Arts Center about the changing political landscape.

Earl, a Democrat who was governor from 1983 to 1986, will visit as part of the Monroe sesquicentennial celebration. He will speak at 7 p.m. today in the Gunderson Stiles Concert Hall at the Monroe Arts Center, 1315 11th St. The event is free and open to the public.

Earl served in the Wisconsin Assembly from 1969 to 1974, when he made a failed bid for state attorney general. He then served as secretary of the Department of Administration and then as head of the Department of Natural Resources.

He defeated Republican candidate Terry Kohler in the 1982 gubernatorial election. Earl served one term before losing an election to Republican Tommy Thompson, who went on to serve four terms as governor.

He is now a retired partner in the Madison office of Quarles & Brady law firm. He serves on the board of directors of various organizations, including American Transmission Company, Center for Clean Air Policy, Friendship Project for Northern Ireland, Inc. and the Wisconsin Partnership for Housing Development.

Ron Spielman, vice president of the trust division of Wisconsin Community Bank, will host tonight's event. Monroe Mayor Ron Marsh will introduce the former governor.
