GALENA, ILL. - A local fire crew responded to assist after a train derailed south of Galena and started a large fire Thursday.

The Darlington Fire Department Hazmat Team responded to Walmart in Galena to assist crews.

Published reports indicate a 105-car BNSF Railway train originating from North Dakota derailed at about 1:20 p.m. Thursday, causing six train cars to become derailed. Two of those cars hauling crude oil split open and ignited. No one was injured. One residence was evacuated.

Fire crews could only get to the fire via a bike path. They were eventually pulled back due to the dangerous conditions and advised to let the fire burn itself out. Flames leapt up hundreds of feet high and could be seen for miles, according to reports.
