JUDA - Green County Sheriff's deputies discovered a device capable of stealing credit card information attached to a gas pump at a Juda gas station in the 2600 block of Wisconsin 11 Thursday morning.
The device, known as a credit card skimmer, was found after management reported at 8:30 a.m. that one of the station's pumps had been tampered with.
The device was attached to the pump's credit card reader and, like all card skimmers, was capable of stealing data from a credit card's magnetic stripe in order to access user's financial information.
According to a Green County Sheriff news release, no other skimmers were found in any of the station's other pumps or at any other station in the region. The skimmer is believed to have been installed within the past 10 days.
Other skimmer incidents were reportedly discovered in Madison in September, with the devices appearing at dozens of stations throughout the state.
Although gas station and ATM managers have taken precautions to prevent skimmer use, customers concerned about their security can use their credit cards inside. Cards with integrated circuit chips are also less vulnerable to traditional card skimmers, although they are still susceptible to theft when used outside of a chip reader.
No arrests have yet been made regarding the Juda incident. The case remains under investigation.
