MONROE - A Monroe woman faces felony charges filed earlier this month related to a traffic accident in the Town of Clarno that partially amputated a motorcyclist's leg.

Heidi R. Valentin, 32, is charged in Green County Circuit Court with causing injury by intoxicated use of a vehicle and causing injury by driving with a prohibited blood-alcohol level. Both counts are Class F felonies, which together carry a maximum punishment of 25 years in prison and $50,000 in fines.

According to court records, Valentin was driving home alone from a restaurant in South Wayne in the early morning hours of July 2 when she crossed the centerline of Wisconsin 11 into the path of a motorcyclist.

The motorcyclist, a man from Warren, was ejected.

He "had suffered partial amputation of his left leg but was alert, conscious and talking," a sheriff's deputy later reported. The deputy applied an emergency tourniquet above the man's open leg fracture to stop bleeding.

The motorcyclist was flown by helicopter to a hospital in Madison due to the severity of his injuries.

Officers found Valentin sitting in her Ford Focus in a ditch, "conscious but confused." Her airbags had deployed.

A responding officer was "unable to detect any odor of intoxicants" on Valentin but noted that her speech was slow and her eyes glassy. She told the officer she'd had a Moscow Mule at the restaurant.

She later registered a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.136 percent. The limit for drivers in Wisconsin is 0.08 percent.

"Heidi had appeared very confused and had told (officers) that she had hit something and wanted to go home," an officer's report states.

State court records show no prior criminal record for Valentin in Wisconsin.

On Sept. 11, she signed a $2,500 signature bond with the conditions that she not drive and not consume intoxicants or enter bars or liquor stores. Her preliminary hearing is Oct. 10.
