Ruth Benkert McCurry

Ruth Benkert McCurry, age 88 of Monroe, Wisconsin, died Wednesday, August 27, 2008. She was born May 8, 1920 in Monroe, the daughter of Charles and Marie (Geisberger) Benkert and graduated from Monroe High School in 1938.

Ruth and Clifford C. McCurry were married on June 23, 1940 in Dubuque, Iowa and they lived in the Kansas City, KS area for 30 years and the Lima, OH area for 10 years where she was employed as an accounting clerk with various businesses, retiring in 1985 from Montgomery Ward Regional Office in Overland Park, KS. Ruth then returned to Monroe, WI, where she worked Xmas help at the Swiss Colony for 10 years. The Thursday morning Golf League at Windy Acres was her joy, along with water exercise at the YMCA since it opened, playing bridge with several groups and at the Friday Senior Center group, and playing pool twice a week at the Senior Center. Ruth was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ and Women of the Moose Chapter #599.

Surviving are three sons, C. James (Carolyn) McCurry of Kearney, NE, Thomas W. (Claudia) McCurry of Bartlesville, OK, and Joel D. (Barbara) McCurry of Grand Canyon, AZ; three granddaughters, Amy (John) Schwartz, Jamie (Akil) Davis and Kimberly (Marty) Barg; four grandsons, Justin (Danielle), Clinton, Craig (Tara) and Samuel McCurry; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Leona Wartenweiler and Gertrude Pickett, both of Monroe; and many nieces and nephews in Monroe. She was predeceased by her parents and her husband, Clifford in 1983; granddaughter, Heather McCurry in 1996; two brothers, Edwin and Walter Benkert; and two sisters, Ada Speich and Frieda Thomm.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 20, 2008 at GARDEN APARTMENTS, 2121-4th Street in Monroe with Rev. William T. Mike Heath officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Monroe.

A Memorial fund is being established in Ruth's Memory.
