MONROE/BLANCHARDVILLE - Myrtle Evelyn Curtis, age 90 of Monroe, formerly of Blanchardville, died on Monday evening, January 21, 2008 at the New Glarus Home. She was born on September 30, 1917 in rural Blanchardville to Melvin and Alma (Kolden) Strommen. She grew up in the rural Blanchardville area, and attended several Blanchardville area rural schools. She worked at Rayovac in Madison, cleaned homes, and then became a seamstress which she continued with for most of her life, sewing draperies, reupholstering furniture, making wedding dresses, slip covers, and altering dresses. She became talented at working with any projects that required sewing, including craft work and quilting. She was a member of the Blanchardville Lutheran Church, and had attended Bethel Lutheran Church when she lived there. She was married on August 17, 1947 in rural Blanchardville to Ralph Delaplane Curtis. They moved to Madison, where they lived until 1966 when they moved to their farm in rural Blanchardville near Yellowstone Lake. She continued living there until 1995 when she moved to Monroe. Myrtle enjoyed her family, spending time with her many relatives and immediate family. She also loved playing cards.
Myrtle is survived by one son, Mike (Geri) Curtis of Brodhead; three grandchildren, Jackie, and Amber Curtis, both of Milwaukee, and A J Curtis of Iowa City, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Ralph who died on September 11, 1982; and a grandson, Andrew Curtis who died on September 27, 1983.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 24, 2008 at the Blanchardville Lutheran Church in Blanchardville. Rev. Mark Gruner assisted by Tim Koester of the Pecatonica Lutheran Parish will officiate. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery in Blanchardville. Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday evening, January 23, 2008 at the Saether Funeral Home in Blanchardville.
