Mavis V. Riese age 77 of Monroe, died Saturday, April 5, 2014 at St. Clare Friedensheim following a courageous battle with cancer. Mavis was born December 19, 1936 in Blanchardville, the daughter of Martin and Venora (Larson) Ingwell. She graduated from Monroe High School in 1954 and married Roy Riese in 1959. Mavis and Roy farmed in Clarno Township before moving to Monroe in 1967. They owned and operated Roy's Tap and The Friendly Inn until 1984. Mavis made many friends by sponsoring dozens of softball, bowling, and pool teams throughout the years. She worked in the Label Prep dept. of the Swiss Colony for many years until retiring in 2012. She was a member of the Monroe Women of the Moose #599, Monroe Woman's Club, and was a loyal Monroe Cheesemaker's fan. Mavis loved her family and especially enjoyed following all of her grandchildren's activities.
She is survived by five children, Donna (Phil) Kehler of Belleville, Curt (Maureen McGuire) Riese, Keith (Peggy) Riese, Kevin (Michelle) Riese, and Kim (Ron) Markham, all of Monroe; a stepdaughter, Janice (Stuart) Taylor and children, Laura and Adam, of South Carolina; nine grandchildren, Caleb (Meghan) Riese, Chelsey (Steve) Ihm, Crae (Lyndsey) Riese, Katie Riese, Taylor Riese, Danielle Riese, Mitchell Riese, and Maddison and Tucker Markham; step-grandchildren, Kate Stewart, Jared (Elise) Stewart; three great-grandchildren, Georgia, Jennings, and Jordy; step-great-granddaughter, Tori; brothers, Marvin (Terri) Ingwell of Monroe; Donald Ingwell of Cary, IL, Bill (Jill) Kilian of Monroe; sisters, Marion Stafford of Monroe and Norma Connor of Freeport; and a sister-in-law, Vicki Ingwell of Monroe. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy, in 1978; longtime companion, Robert Monte in 1999; a brother, Vic Ingwell in 2008; brothers-in-law, Rod Stafford and James "Buck" Connor; and a sister-in-law, Sue Ingwell.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 10, 2014, at 11:00 a.m., at the Monroe United Methodist Church with Rev. Randy Booth officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Monroe. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 9th, at the Newcomer Funeral Home, Monroe, and at the church on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
