Loraine D. Whelan, 82, of Eau Claire, passed away Friday afternoon at Mayo Clinic Health Systems, Eau Claire. She was born on November 14, 1928, in Belleville, Wisconsin, to Gustave and Clara (Grossenbacher) Hefty. She graduated from Monticello High School in Monticello in 1946. After graduation she worked at Milwaukee Area Technical College for 12 years then retired to become a full time mother and homemaker. In 1957, Loraine married Clarence Whelan at Saint Victor's Catholic Church in Monroe, WI.
She was a volunteer at Sacred Heart Hospital for numerous years, a faithful member of First Congregational Church, UCC for over 30 years and a 14 year lung cancer survivor. Loraine will be remembered as a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother.
Loraine is survived by her husband of 54 years, Clarence; daughter, Joan (Kevin) Gostomski of Appleton; grandchildren, Alicia and Taylor Gostomski of Appleton; sister, Anna Mae Gibbons of Monroe; sister-in-law, Lucille Whelan of Eau Claire; and also by several nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; 2 sisters, Dora Gladys Hefty and Hilda (Roy) Bissig; 2 brothers, Alvin Hefty and Richard (Frances) Hefty; 3 brother-in-laws, Declan Whelan, Edward Gibbons and Ralph Lindsay.
Loraine was a refined, gentle lady who always put her family first and was extremely proud of her Swiss heritage.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the ministries of First Congregational Church UCC, Mayo Clinic Health Systems or a memorial of choice.
Funeral services for Loraine will be held at 11 a.m.. on Tuesday, September 20, 2011, at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 310 Broadway St., Eau Claire, with Rev. Dr. Mark X. Pirazzini officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the church. Interment will be in Saint Patrick's Cemetery, Eau Claire.
