NEW GLARUS - Gerald Jacob Disch, 89, died on Wednesday, May 28, 2008, in New Glarus, WI.
Gerry was born on August 16, 1918, in New Glarus, WI. He served in the US Marine Corps for four years and was stationed in the South Pacific during WWII for two years. He returned to New Glarus in 1945 where he and his Dad started a thriving business, Disch Hardware Inc., which Gerry continued to operate until his retirement.
Throughout his life, Gerry was a very active member of the community. He was a charter member of the Lions Club for 67 years and received their Melvin Jones Fellow for Dedicated Humanitarian Service. He was a Charter member of the Edelweiss Country Club in New Glarus. Gerry served 26 years on the Board of Directors of the New Glarus Home. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Bank of New Glarus for 26 years. Gerry also served 10 years on the Swiss Church Consistory and 6 years on the New Glarus village board. He served 2 terms on the Cedar Lake Board of Directors.
Gerry is survived by his loving family: son, Gerald J. (Mitch) Disch (Deanna), and grandchildren, Hilary and Jacob Disch of Beaver Dam, WI., and daughter, Judy Disch Hillestad (Richard) of Topanga, CA, and grandchildren, Jennifer Hillestad Stevenson (Kent) and Jesse Hillestad, and one great-grandchild, Savannah Ray Stevenson. He is also survived by his loving brother, Rollie (Shirley) Disch, and many nieces and nephews. Gerry is preceded in death by his wife, Ann Mitchell Disch, his sister, Lucille Hartman (George), a brother, Dennis, and his parents, Jacob and Bertha Streiff Disch.
Gerry loved people and loved having fun and loved spending time with all of his family. He was an outstanding businessman who contributed much to the community. He was especially dedicated to the Swiss United Church of Christ and the New Glarus Home. His joyous spirit and sense of humor will be greatly missed, and He will always be in the thoughts of his family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 2, 2008 at the Swiss United Church of Christ, 18 5th Ave., New Glarus, WI with Rev. Tom Nielsen and Pastor Patty Marty officiating with burial in the Swiss Church Cemetery with full military honors.
Relatives and friends may call from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Sunday, June 1, 2008 at the Zentner-Beal Funeral Home, 29 6th Ave., New Glarus, WI.
