Edward H. Berning, 96, of Menominee, IL, died Saturday, Nov. 8, 2008 at the home of his daughter, Carol Weber, in Platteville, WI, surrounded by his loving family.

Edward was born on July 20, 1912 in Vinegar Hill Township, son of Anton and Irene Berning. He married Mary Ellen Heitkamp on Nov. 26, 1940 in Menominee. They enjoyed nearly 68 years of marriage. Edward attended school in Vinegar Hill and later completed the University of Wisconsin Agricultural Short Course. He farmed from 1940 to 1976. After retiring from farming, he worked at the Sinsinawa Mound for 16 years, and later spent many hours in his workshop making treasures for his children and grandchildren. Edward was an active member of the Nativity BVM parish and the Holy Name Society. He was a member of the Farm Bureau and was president of the Jo Daviess County Service Company for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ellen; seven children: Carol (James) Weber of Platteville, WI, David (Marie) Berning of Freeport, IL, Dan (Doris) Berning of Hazel Green, WI, Charlie (Phyllis) Berning of Menominee, IL, Joanne (Maurie) Tobin of Dubuque, Iowa, Mary (Phil) Austin of Monroe, WI, Marty (Sheri) Berning of Hazel Green, WI; a special member of the family, Rev. Arun John of Grosse Pointe, LA; 30 grandchildren; and 37 great-grandchildren. Also surviving is one sister, Rosie Fleege; brothers-in-law, Robert Heitkamp and James (LaVonne) Heitkamp; and sisters-in-law, Rosie Berning, Anne Berning, Monica Houtakker, and Germaine Robinson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Walter, Earl and Vincent; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Joseph and Irene Heitkamp; brothers-in-law, Jerome Fleege, Clarence Houtakker and Hubert Robinson; and sisters-in-law, Irene Berning and Margaret Heitkamp.

Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 13, at Nativity BVM Church in Menominee, with burial in the parish cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 12, at Furlong Funeral Home in Galena, IL. The Scripture wake service will be held at 3 p.m. followed by the Holy Name rosary. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Nativity BVM School.
