Alois "Allie" Mayer, age 82, of rural Monroe, died on Thursday, November 3, 2016 at Monroe Clinic Hospital. He was born in Monroe on October 5, 1934, the son of Ambrose and Amelia (Humpler) Mayer. On September 24, 1955 he married Kathleen Schutt at St. Victor's Catholic Church in Monroe. They had four sons, Steve, Mark, James, and Doug. On June 19, 1993 he married Carol (Stoll) Miller at the Four Seasons House near Woodford, WI.
He grew up and worked with his mom and dad in their cheese factory. He also worked with Glen Benkert on his farm. He graduated from Monroe High School in 1952. He enjoyed farming his entire life with the majority of years on the home farm. In 1982 he hosted the first Cheese Days Farm Tour and continued until 2002. He also was a 4-H Dairy Leader for several years, Director of the Chalet Co-Op for over 20 years, and a lifelong member of the St. Victor's Catholic Church. He served on the Monroe Town Board for 40 years, and was Chairman for 26 of those years. He enjoyed square dancing, watching westerns, playing cards, and his tractor collection.
He is survived by his wife Carol; sons, Steve (Lonna) Mayer, Mark (Lynn) Mayer, and Doug (Sandy Horstmeier) Mayer. He is also survived by a step-daughter, Jody Ace; five grandchildren, Jeremy Mayer, Abby Reckinger, Lindsey Drake, Eric and Josh Mayer; one step-granddaughter, Tristin Ace; six great-grandchildren, Connor, Katelynn, and Colden Reckinger, and Brooklynn and Aubree Drake, and Jack Mayer; brother, Otto (Judy) Mayer; nephew, Jeffrey Mayer; niece, Brenda Kohls; sisters-in-law, Judy Murray and Marge (Sherwood) Carlson, and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and son, James.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 7, 2016 at St. Clare of Assisi Parish at St. Victor's Catholic Church with Monsignor Larry Bakke celebrant. Burial will follow services at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 6, 2016 at the SHRINER HAGER GOHLKE Funeral Home. All memorials may be directed to the James Mayer Scholarship Fund.
