BRODHEAD - Albert (Albrecht) Elmer Jr., age 96 of Brodhead, passed away Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at the Woods Crossing Nursing Home, Brodhead. He was born February 3, 1914 at home in Brooklyn Township, near Dayton WI, the son of Albert Sr. (Albrecht) and Lena (Joespha Korlena Machler) Elmer. Albert was married to Phyllis Louise (Zimmerman) on February 26, 1938 at the Emmanuel Evangelical Church, Monroe by Reverend Alvin C. Rabehl.

Albert was well-known for being one of the first in the area to do custom harvesting: corn picking, silage chopping, corn shelling and drying. He loved to dance and bowled on three different teams in Brodhead and Albany. He also enjoyed the great outdoors while fishing and deer hunting. Albert retired after farming for 60 years.

Albert is survived by his son, David Albert (Barbara Marie Hauri) Elmer of Brodhead; one grandson, Brian David (Laura Kaye Jerney Franzen) Elmer of Madison WI; one granddaughter, DeAnn Marie Elmer of Mason OH; one great-grandson, Maxwell Brian Jerney Elmer; one great-granddaughter, Zoey Rose Jerney Franzen.

He is also survived by one brother, Walter (Jean) Elmer, Albany; two sisters, Helen Schneeberger, Evansville, Kathryn Jorenby, Janesville; sister-in-law Betty (Zimmerman) Shultz, Monroe.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Lena; his wife, Phyllis; two sisters, Bertha Wells, Rosa (Rose) Gempeler; four brother-in-laws, Hans Schneeberger Sr., Gordon Wells, Glenn Gempeler, Norris Jorenby; brother-in-law on Zimmerman side, Russel Shultz.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 8, 2010 at Brodhead United Methodist Church, 501 1st Center Avenue, Brodhead, with Pastor Stephen G. Groves officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Albany. Visitation will be held on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of services. A memorial fund will be established.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at the Woods Crossing Nursing Home for their care during Albert's stay since November 18, 2005, and to extend a special thank-you to the Monroe Clinic Hospice Care nurses and staff for their added care and support during his last few months of life here on earth.
