MONROE - The National Historic Cheesemaking Center will open for its 18th season at 9 a.m. Sunday, April 1.

The center, 2108 6th Ave., is open seven days a week and is operated by a staff of more than 50 volunteers, who last year welcomed visitors from 26 foreign countries and 45 states. It offers local tourism information as well as maps and brochures detailing events, tourism and attractions, including local restaurants, hotels, motels and businesses in Monroe and dozens of area communities in Green County.

Restored in Milwaukee, Chicago and St. Paul Railroad Depot, the center's main focus is its museum, which features a varied and thorough recounting of more than 100 years of cheesemaking history, including equipment and memorabilia from area cheesemakers.

This year, members and volunteers worked through the winter months to expand the museum to an additional room of displays and artifacts. It will also display a restored horse-drawn milk wagon this year.

The non-profit National Historic Cheesemaking Center sustains itself with memberships, donations, museum admissions, a gift shop and a concession trailer that serves cream puffs and Master Grilled Cheese Sandwiches at area events.
