MONROE - A cheese and dairy destination initiative group in Green County is now incorporated and ready to do a feasibility study for its proposed dairy and cheese industry cultural center.
The World Cheese Discovery Center, Inc., announced Friday that its Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) application was approved. The grant opens the way for a feasibility study to be done.
The planning grant gives the group $15,000, matched by a $15,000 grant pre-approved July 27 by the City of Monroe Visitor and Promotion Board.
The study is intended to help determine the potential of the center as a business and tourism attraction. The study is expected to be completed by the end of February.
The proposed facility is intended to showcase the cheese industry, promote agriculture tourism and drive the local economy. The group expects the center to become the home of cheese-related exhibits and activities to educate visitors, particularly about cheeses made in Wisconsin.
The facility would also contribute to new cheese research and cheesemaking techniques, and provide a planning and training space for entrepreneurs and cheese industry professionals.
The next meeting of the World Cheese Destination Center board is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Jan 20 at the Wisconsin Community Bank.
