A Browntown man who ran from police on his motorcycle last month tried running again — this time on foot, even as he awaited the outcome of his previous felony charges in Green County Circuit Court.
The defendant, 44-year-old Matthew A. Fisher, is now in custody, appeared before Circuit Judge Faun M. Phillipson, on Thursday, following his most recent arrest on July 5.
According to police reports, county deputies stopped a car for an equipment violation near Wolf Road and County P in the Town of Cadiz, police said in a statement. During the stop, Fisher — a passenger who had an active felony warrant — ran from police and was later located and taken into custody by deputies near the Illinois-Wisconsin State Line.
The motorcycle chase unfolded on June 19 when Fisher, who had warrants, fled from police on his bike after police approached to question him in a parking area near a boat launch off of Wis. 11. At one point, the defendant and a deputy seemed to be fighting for control of the bike, with Fisher allegedly able to climb on and accelerate.
“Fisher then accelerated at a high rate of speed…while my left hand was on his wrist,” said the criminal complaint in the case, which led to a police chase that was eventually terminated after reaching speeds as high as 112 MPH.
At the time of the June 19 motorcycle incident, officials said in a statement Fisher had been out on bond for four criminal cases in Green County, including two felonies and a pair of misdemeanors. Meanwhile, the statement said, “Official Criminal Charges were issued against Fisher on July 7, 2026 ... stemming from an April 16, 2026 incident in the City of Monroe in which Fisher was charged with; Knowingly Violate a Domestic Abuse Order — Injunction, Stalking - Previous Conviction w/in 7 Yrs (Felony), Bail Jumping-Felony x2.”
On Wednesday, July 8, the defendant, the statement continued, was officially charged in the June 19 incident for “fleeing from law enforcement Resisting or Obstructing an Officer x2, Vehicle Operator Flee/Elude Officer (Felony), 2nd-Degree Recklessly Endangering Safety (Felony), Bail Jumping-Felony x4.” Bond across all of his criminal cases was set at $108,000.
During the Thursday hearing, the defendant pleaded not guilty to all charges and in consultation with his attorney, Adam Witt, waived his right to hold a preliminary hearing. Witt told the judge that he had been in discussions with the district attorney’s office about the case and asked Phillipson to schedule a plea/sentencing hearing.
The hearing is set for 10 a.m. on Sept. 9.
The defendant has a history of domestic related issues leading to felonies and misdemeanor domestic charges in recent years, and he has allegedly tried to contact victims from jail.
“It was discovered that while he was confined at the Green County Jail in February of 2026… Matthew was contacting (the victim) from the Jail,” said one of the complaints. “Matthew has additional cases of similar instances in the City of Monroe…”
Fisher remains in custody in Green County Jail.
