BLANCHARDVILLE - Among the many places people in Blanchardville have gathered over the years is the Blanchardville United Methodist Church.

Built in 1890 on a hill on the north end of town, the church commands an impressive view of the village. The church was built for less than $1,000.

In 1900 a two-faced clock was installed in the church's steeple. In the mid-1900s, the community held an open house at the church to honor pioneer teacher Ella Baker Bainbridge.

Religion has always been important to the village.

The first church in the community was probably the Reorganized Church of the Latter Day Saints. There were also ministers who traveled around the area, holding church services for people in town.

Building churches was a sign the community was continuing to grow. Within 20 years of the church's construction there were banks, a lumber company, insurance offices, two doctors, a dentist, two jewelry stores, four general merchandise stores, a blacksmith shop, a cigar making shop and an opera house.
